The global telephone network is the world’s largest machine. A phone anywhere in the world can place a
call to any other phone. Thousands of telecom operators run sub-networks within the global network.
They compete but they must also cooperate & interconnect their networks.
Our Interconnect Billing module manages payments between operators when calls cross networks. The operator
that bills the customer must pay the ‘other operators’ on whose networks the call has travelled. These
‘other operators’ must ensure that they are paid. Payments are two-way & settlement works out the net
amount owing. If an operator negotiates good interconnect rates from other operators they can lower retail
rates and attract more business. Alternatively, margins are good on incoming traffic from other operators
& the cost of customer service, billing and collections is low.
Interconnect is often the single largest cost that new operators incur!
For larger operators, it is often one of their largest sources of revenue.
